Construction Case Study – Ceramic Fiber Roll

1. Definition
Ceramic fiber roll is a lightweight, high-temperature insulating material manufactured by melting high-purity alumina and silica in a resistance furnace, fiberizing the melt through spinning, collecting the fibers into a continuous mat, mechanically needling to enhance tensile strength, transversely trimming to exact width, and winding into roll form.

2. Key Properties
Service Temperature
• Standard grade: 1 050 °C
• Standard grade: 1 260 °C
• High-purity grade: 1 350 °C
• Zirconia-containing grade: 1 430 °C

Thermal Conductivity
• ≤ 0.09 W·m⁻¹·K⁻¹ at 400 °C
• ≤ 0.16 W·m⁻¹·K⁻¹ at 800 °C

Density
• 64, 96, 128, 160 kg·m⁻³; 128 kg·m⁻³ is most common.

Chemical Stability
Chemically inert except to hydrofluoric acid, phosphoric acid and strong alkalis.

Additional Characteristics
Low heat storage, excellent thermal-shock resistance, asbestos-free, easily field-cut.

3. Typical Applications
• Furnace, kiln and heater linings and backup insulation
• Boilers, piping, heat exchangers and gas-turbine insulation
• Petrochemical cracking, reformer and reforming-furnace linings
• High-temperature ducts, stacks, valve and flange insulation blankets
• Thermal insulation layers for appliances, automotive and aerospace sectors

4. Dimensions & Packaging
Thickness: 6–50 mm (25 mm and 50 mm most common)
Width: 610 mm or 1 220 mm
Length: 3 600 mm, 7 200 mm or customized
Packing: heat-shrink film + carton + pallet; outer labels show product data, batch number and date.

5. Installation Guidelines (Condensed)
1. Substrate must be clean, dry and free of rust, dust and oil.
2. Secure with stainless-steel anchors (Φ6 mm studs with washers) at 6–12 pcs/m² in a staggered pattern.
3. Joints shall be butt-pressed or T-lapped and sealed with high-temperature adhesive or ceramic-fiber strips.
4. Provide expansion gaps in outer metal cladding to prevent cracking during thermal cycling.

6. Safety & Environmental
Inhalable inorganic fibers; wear dust masks, safety goggles and long-sleeve overalls during installation.
Compliant with REACH and RoHS; free from carcinogenic additives.

7. Reference Standards
• GB/T 3003-2017, Refractory fibres and products
• ASTM C892, Standard Specification for High-Temperature Fiber Blanket
• EN 1094-8, Refractory products—Test methods for fibre blankets
